Yesterday my mom took me out for lunch to Peppino in Kensington (#101 - 1240 Kensington Road NW). I've been there many times before and it's one of my favorite places to get a sandwich/sub.

In my March 11, 2008 post, "10 Places to Eat in Toronto", I mentioned my love for Da Maria Pizzeria in Toronto and Martin Aller-Stead posted a comment: [...] the Stromboli Inn on Kensington just west of 10th Street NW used to have the best pizza in Calgary, bar none. Well, I looked for the Stromboli Inn for quite a while after that and, not being able to find it, I had figured that it probably doesn't exist anymore. And then just the other day, I found out that The Stromboli Inn is now Pulcinella - owned by the same family and now in the hands of the younger generation. A good friend of mine had actually introduced me to Pulcinella (1147 Kensington Crescent NW) in February 2007 and I've been back several times since then, most recently last Wednesday (April 9, 2008).

When it comes to eating out, living in Sunnyside definitely has it's benefits. We have downtown Calgary (and Chinatown) just a short walk across the Bow River (through Prince's Island Park) and Kensington is also just a short walk to the west; both are abundant in restaurants. Last Monday (April 7th, 2008), we decided to go somewhere new so we tried out Charly Chan's in Kensington.

To say that I like Chinese food would be a huge understatement. I probably eat Chinese food at least once a week - I really enjoy trying out new dishes and new places. In Calgary's Chinatown, I've tried out a lot of places but most often go to Regency Palace and Silver Dragon. After passing by it several times, I recently decided to visit Harbour City Restaurant on Centre Street. I had read a couple internet reviews about how good the dim sum is at Harbour City, so I decided to try it for dinner one night. It turned out to be a good night to try it out - they were having a 15% off promotion before they closed their doors to renovate. (It’s currently closed now for renovations and will re-open on May 1st.) We (three of us) arrived early in the evening and...

We've been living in Sunnyside since last July (2007) - Kensington is just a short walk away and downtown Calgary is just across the river. It's great to have so many restaurants close by. After passing by the Broken Plate in Kensington so many times, we finally decided to go try it out last Wednesday night for dinner. We (three of us) got there at around 7:30pm or so and the restaurant seemed to be pretty busy for a Wednesday night. We hadn't made a reservation in advance but...

Donairs at A & A Foods

My favorite place for donairs, (and the best I've been able to find in Calgary), is A & A Foods at 1401 - 20 Ave NW. Everything is very fresh, the donair meat is seasoned perfectly and is exceptionally moist. The donairs come in three sizes: small, medium and large. The small size is adequate for most people and is equivalent to what is considered a "large" everywhere else. Also of note is that they are very generous with the meat. All-in-all, it's a great donair and I highly recommend it.

There are so many great places to eat in Toronto that it can give you option anxiety. It's one of the biggest things I miss about Toronto - the culture and the numerous restaurants. Out here in Calgary you mostly find large chains and it's nothing like what you get from the smaller independent restaurants that line the streets of Toronto.
